Swingin' Utters

Originally formed in the '80s, the Swingin' Utters brought their own brand of aggressive music to the growing Bay Area punk scene. As well as being classed as a rock, street punk and even Oi band, reminiscent of British '70s bands, Swingin' Utters have increasingly shown themselves to be influenced by traditional Irish, American country, folk, and Reggae. Soon the Swingin' Utters established their position as the West Coast's most dependable purveyors of gimmick-free punk. The genre is all about nonconformity and youthful aggression and rebelling against all things corporate. Without straying from their proletariat roots and blue-collar attitude, the Utters managed to maintain a nearly impossible level of respect from a culture that generally despises any shifts toward mainstream popularity. Swingin' Utters seem ready to defy the usual aging process that forces most punk bands to become little more than musical points of reference. The original punk revivalists stand undeterred by odds that are surely stacked against them, at least in a commercial sense. Of course, MTV sex-appeal and success on the pop-charts have no correlation to punk rock triumph. No lucrative record deal or marketing tactic could prove victory for the Swingin' Utters. These details are trivial in comparison to what the band possesses: a loyal fan-base of several decades and a permanent position in the history book of American punk.

Kinch

"Plodding pianos and crunchy guitars are Kinch's main steeze, but the vocals waft along at a forgiving, easy-pea pace, giving just enough to turn the plod and the crunch into something surprisingly gentle." -AbsolutePunk.net

The Philadelphia Film & Music Festival presents:
Authentic Records Showcase with:

Slo Mo featuring Mic Wrecka
Slo-Mo is the brainchild of Philadelphia steel guitarist Mike "Slo-Mo" Brenner. Brenner has spent time on the road and in the studio playing steel guitar with such bands as Marah, Magnolia Electric Company and Badly Drawn Boy, but Slo-Mo featuring Mic Wrecka is something totally different.
Slo-Mo featuring Mic Wrecka combines Brenner's lap steel-driven grooves and the hip hop poetry of frontman Mic Wrecka. Backed by a tight and funky band and singers Sue Rosetti and Steph Hayes (from Stargazer Lily), Brenner and Wrecka effortlessly meld genres, creating a steel guitar/hip-hop hybrid unlike anything you’ve ever heard.

The Nadas

Benjamin Wagner
Benjamin Wagner has been working the New York club scene for over ten years, self-releasing ten LPs along the way. Famed "Idiot's Delight" host Vince Scelsa described him as "extraordinary." R.E.M. front man Michael Stipe dubbed him a "future superstar." VH1 News called his songs, "Timeless." The New York Press, says "He's Ryan Adams without the 'tude, Pete Yorn without the hair, John Denver without the glasses, Dave Matthews without the dance moves."

River City Extension

"Though from the Jersey Shore, River City Extension boasts a welcome worldly sound. Hints of the classic "Jersey Shore sound" (pioneered by Bruce Springsteen and Southside Johnny And The Asbury Jukes) color their songs, yet the band borrows liberally from Americana, mariachi, blues and calypso to create a compellingly distinct hybrid all their own."- Alternative Press

If David Byrne is one of the geniuses of modern times, then Start Making Sense is a tribute to genius. The musicians in this 7-piece Talking Heads cover have come from psychedelia-funk, NYC underground spoof bands, worldbeat jam, head-banging punk and from onstage with Frank Zappa's band members to bring to stage a "once in a lifetime" experience. A rockin', funkin', danceable celebration of the new-wave punk we loved from the 80's with frontman Jon Braun as a spot-on David Byrne - suit too big and all.

The New Music Series welcomes:

Can You Canoe
Based out of West Chester, Pennsylvania; Can You Canoe is the brainchild of musician and songwriter John Panasuk, with adjoining members: Jesse Neitz, Yamil Emedan, Colin Ringkamp, and Dave Clark, who have been working hard since the band’s formation in April 2009. After recording and compiling the Brandywine EP from April to August, Can You Canoe set off on a nation wide tour promoting the distant release of their record. In the months following their rigorous promo-tour, the band decided to take some more time to continue writing and put the finishing touches on the Brandywine EP. It may still be early, but Can You Canoe already has the musicianship and performance required to thrive in today’s music scene as they absorb their listeners, inciting them to realize musical integrity doesn’t have to be compromised at the expense of a “full-time” effort.

Adalie
"Love or detest it, there’s a pretty happenin’ emo/screamo/pop-punk scene in Philly that only continues to grow, and local four-piece Adalie has vaulted near the top of that heap of bands just two years after forming. Taking its cues from Taking Back Sunday, Jimmy Eat World and Glassjaw, among others, Adalie brings high-pitched vocals, the occasional raw-throated yowl, buzzsaw guitars, a healthy dose of sweet melodies and catchy choruses ... a sound and vision that seems to charm the kids (and editors of Alternative Press magazine). It has already gotten them on tours like Warped and Taste of Chaos, and could make them one of Philly’s breakout acts of 2010." - Philadelphia Weekly

Stewart John
Stewart John has been involved with some avenue of music his whole life. For the last seven years he has been armed with a guitar while writing, performing, and recording with various bands and artists from the Midwest. Through these personal life experiences, John paints a picture that any audience can relate to. By combining catchy pop melodies with strong guitar leads, Stewart has created his own unique sound which has been termed "guitar-pop".
